FAQs about Boreholes and Private Water Supplies

Having a borehole drilled and your own private water supply installed by Vossbrook is a simple 4 step process. Even so, you undoubtedly have questions about the process - and about the quality of water which will flow from your taps. You can find answers to the most common questions we are asked are below. Please contact us if your question is not answered here.

Do I need permission from someone to install a private water supply?

No. Provided you are not planning to use more than 20,000 litres per day there is no licencing requirement (the usage in a large house will be well under 1000 litres per day), and if you plan to use over 20,000 litres per day for a commercial application we will assist in applying for the requisite licence.

How much will it cost?

This depends on how deep the borehole needs to be, which we can easily establish from geological records, and how much water you need to abstract, but a typical domestic installation will cost between £6,000 and £8,000.

What happens to my mains supply?

We will cap your mains supply, your water meter will stop turning, and you will stop paying for metered mains water!

How long will the whole process take?

From drilling to completion of the installation takes us on average three weeks.

Will we definitely find water when the borehole is drilled?

By studying your geology and with the assistance of a hydrogeological survey we will be able to establish how deep we need to drill and what quality and quantity of water we can expect to find. We will advise against proceeding unless we are absolutely confident that we will find a suitable water supply and in the very unlikely event that we go ahead and do not find water you will benefit from the Vossbrook guarantee - all drilling and ancillary costs will be borne by us.

Will I need to replace all my existing pipework?

No. We will plumb into your existing pipework to ensure minimal disruption.

How much room is need for above ground equipment?

The above ground equipment, consisting of filtration and pressure vessel, requires a footprint of 1.5m x 0.5m so will comfortably fit into a small shed or part of an outbuilding or garage.

Will I still be affected by hose pipe bans?

No. You will not be subject to hose pipe bans. You will own and control your water supply giving you freedom to abstract and use your water as you see fit.

Will I need to filter the water?

Yes. You will need a sediment filter to remove tiny particles and usually a UV filter to guarantee high quality drinking water. We will analyse your water when the drilling has been completed and will then be able to select and install suitable filtration for your installation.

How much mess will be made?

We pride ourselves on running well organised tidy sites. We use robust ground protection mats to ensure that your land is not damaged and will remove all spoil from site or spread on site according to your instructions.
